Resolution
This is possible by configuring a custom AutoCAD worker
A pre-requisite is the ability by some third party tool, to create a PDF for AutoCAD Drawings from the command line
This is then integrated with Windchill using the Windchill Visualization Services (WVS) Generic Worker framework (see CS67812)
Configure a worker of type ACAD for the AutoCAD content of WTDocuments by adding either or both of the following properties to the wvs.properties, using the xconfmanager utility:

worker.AutoCAD=ACAD
(Maps the WTDocument File Format AutoCAD to a defined worker of type ACAD)

worker..DWG=ACAD
(Maps WTDocument content with a File Extension of .DWG to a defined worker of type ACAD)
The result is that the Thumbnail Placeholder icon on the Information Page of the respective WTDocuments will change to be a Publish Default Representation icon and a publish job will result from clicking on it.
The only limitation of this is that AutoCAD external references (Xrefs) to content on other WTDocs will not be supported.
Warning: This is considered a custom configuration, primarily because PTC have not performed full testing of this alternative configuration
Customers implementing this will need to perform extensive testing of the mechanism
PTC do not guarantee to address issues found with anything but the Generic Worker Framework that it utilizes
